Why convert PNG to WebP?
PNG is a great lossless format, but its files are large. WebP delivers the same visual quality at a fraction of the size — typically 60–90% smaller — while keeping transparency support. Smaller images mean faster websites, better Core Web Vitals scores and less bandwidth.
Unlike other online converters, shrink.run does the conversion on your own device with Google’s libwebp encoder compiled to WebAssembly. There is no upload step, no server queue and no file size limit.
Frequently asked questions
Are my PNG files uploaded anywhere?
No. Conversion runs entirely in your browser using a WebAssembly build of libwebp — Google’s own WebP encoder. Your images never leave your device.
How much smaller will my images get?
WebP typically produces files 60–90% smaller than PNG for photos and screenshots, at quality levels that are visually indistinguishable. Graphics with few colors compress especially well.
Does WebP support transparency?
Yes. Unlike JPEG, WebP fully supports alpha transparency, so logos and UI graphics convert from PNG without losing their transparent backgrounds.
Which browsers can display WebP?
All modern browsers — Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge — have supported WebP since 2020. It is safe to use on any current website.
What quality setting should I use?
The default of 80 is a good balance for most images. For photos you can often go down to 70; for images with sharp text, try 85–90.
